in a village there once lived two men who had the same name. they were both called claus. one of them had four horses, but the other had only one; so to distinguish them, people called the owner of the four horses, “great claus,” and he who had only one, “little claus.” now we shall hear what happened to them, for this is a true story.

through the whole week, little claus was obliged to plough for great claus, and lend him his one horse; and once a week, on a sunday, great claus lent him all his four horses. then how little claus would smack his whip over all five horses, they were as good as his own on that one day. the sun shone brightly, and the church bells were ringing merrily as the people passed by, dressed in their best clothes, with their prayer-books under their arms. they were going to hear the clergyman preach. they looked at little claus ploughing with his five horses, and he was so proud that he smacked his whip, and said, “gee-up, my five horses.”

“you must not say that,” said big claus; “for only one of them belongs to you.” but little claus soon forgot what he ought to say, and when any one passed he would call out, “gee-up, my five horses!”

“now i must beg you not to say that again,” said big claus; “for if you do, i shall hit your horse on the head, so that he will drop dead on the spot, and there will be an end of him.”

“i promise you i will not say it any more,” said the other; but as soon as people came by, nodding to him, and wishing him “good day,” he became so pleased, and thought how grand it looked to have five horses ploughing in his field, that he cried out again, “gee-up, all my horses!”

  英语阅读文章 5

There was a king who had twelve beautiful daughters. They slept in twelve beds all in one room; and when they went to bed, the doors were shut and locked up; but every morning their shoes were found to be quite worn through as if they had been danced in all night; and yet nobody could find out how it happened, or where they had been.

Then the king made it known to all the land, that if any person could discover the secret, and find out where it was that the princesses danced in the night, he should have the one he liked best for his wife, and should be king after his death; but whoever tried and did not succeed, after three days and nights, should be put to death.

A kings son soon came. He was well entertained, and in the evening was taken to the chamber next to the one where the princesses lay in their twelve beds. There he was to sit and watch where they went to dance; and, in order that nothing might pass without his hearing it, the door of his chamber was left open. But the kings son soon fell asleep; and when he awoke in the morning he found that the princesses had all been dancing, for the soles of their shoes were full of holes. The same thing happened the second and third night: so the king ordered his head to be cut off. After him came several others; but they had all the same luck, and all lost their lives in the same manner.

Long ago in a small, faraway village, there was a place known as the House of 1000 Mirrors. A small, happy little dog learned of this place and decided to visit. When he arrived,he hounced happily up the stairs to the doorway of the house. He looked through the doorway with his ears lifted high and his tail wagging as fast as it could. To his great surprise,he found himself staring at 1000 other happy little dogs with their tails wagging just as fast as his.

He smiled a great smile, and was answered with 1000 great smiles just as warm and firendly. As he left the House,he thought to himself,This is a wonderful place. I will e back and visit it often.

In this same village, another little dog,who was not quite as happy as the first one, decided to visit the house. He slowly climbed the stairs and hung his head low as he looked into the door. When he saw the 1000 unfriendly looking dogs staring back at him,he growled at them and was horrified to see 1000 little dogs growling back at him. As he left,he thought to himself,That is a horrible place, and I will never go back there again.

All the faces in the world are mirrors. What kind of reflections do you see in Oh,Mr. Fox,shouted the cat. You and your hundred tricks are left in the lurch. If you been able to climb like I can,you would not have lost your life.

We shall be much obliged to you, said the impostors, and then they named the different colors and described the pattern of the pretended stuff. The old minister listened attentively to their words, in order that he might repeat them to the Emperor; and then the knaves asked for more silk and gold, saying that it was necessary to complete what they had begun.

However, they put all that was given them into their knapsacks; and continued to work with as much apparent diligence as before at their empty looms.

The Emperor now sent another officer of his court to see how the men were getting on, and to ascertain whether the cloth would soon be ready. It was just the same with this gentleman as with the minister; he surveyed the looms on all sides, but could see nothing at all but the empty frames.

Between Macedon and Thessaly of eastern Greece there stood a high mountain. Its cloudy top rushed into the very heavens. On the top of the mountain, the home of the gods was bathed in brightness.

At Olympus Zeus ruled as the father of gods and men. Zeus was not a crude ruler by any standards. All the gods listened to his final words,it was true. But Zeus made them all sit on a committee of twelve members, including six gods and six goddesses.

The first in the Olympian crowd sat Zeus himself. He was the overlord of gods and men and the operator of the thunderbolt .Next to him was Hera, his proud and greeneyed queen.Poseidon was ruler of the sea,And Hades, king of the lower world, had no seat in the committee.Apollo was the god of the sun, music and poetry, while his twinsister Artemis was the goddess of the moon and the chase. Athena was the goddess of wisdom and patroness of house holdarts.Hestin, the goddess of the family, represented home life and family happiness. The frightening Ares was the god of war,and the charming Aphrodite the goddess of love and beauty. The god of fire,Hephaestus, was the forger of the thunderbolts of Zeus. The wing footed messenger Hermes was the god of invention and commerce;and the goddess of grains and harvests,Demeter, looked after agriculture and stood for mother ofcivilization.

All the chief gods mentioned above took human forms of incomparable beauty and grace. Often moved by human feelings and desires, they frequently gave way to anger and jealousy. They became involved in ceaseless battles with the world of man. Among themselves at Olympus they plotted and struggled for power. In the human world they experienced competitions and difficulties. They enjoyed earthly friendships and loves.Acrowd of everlasting gods looked and acted in a perfectly human fashion that is what all gods at Olympus actually were.

The gorillas in the valleys in the south often lived together in groups of several tens. They were fond of drinking wine, and even fonder of imitating mans behavior.

People knew very well their habits and often put wine or distillers grains on the roadside together with many straw sandals connected together with ropes.

The gorillas knew this was a trick to lure3 them into traps and cursed:'Humph! Do you think we dont know your tricks? Well never be taken in!'

So they called one another, turned round and left.

But they had already smelled the aroma of the wine, and couldnt bear to part with it. Even after they left, they would turn their heads to look back. When they saw no one there, they would turn back; and after they turned back, they were afraid of being deceived, and left again. After much hesitation5, they finally said to themselves: 'Just for a taste of the wine. It wont matter as long as we dont get drunk.'

Shortly afterwards, they agreed to come back to drink the wine. When they got drunk, they forgot everything. Every gorilla1 put on the straw sandals and imitated the way man walks.

As a result, they fell down one after another and were all caught alive by people.

Many years ago, there was an Emperor, who was so excessively fond of new clothes, that he spent all his money in dress. He did not trouble himself in the least about his soldiers; nor did he care to go either to the theatre or the chase, except for the opportunities then afforded him for displaying his new clothes.

He had a different suit for each hour of the day; and as of any other king or emperor, one is accustomed to say, 'he is sitting in council,'it was always said of him, 'The Emperor is sitting in his wardrobe.'

Time passed merrily in the large town which was his capital; strangers arrived every day at the court. One day, two rogues, calling themselves weavers, made their appearance. They gave out that they knew how to weave stuffs of the most beautiful colors and elaborate patterns, the clothes manufactured from which should have the wonderful property of remaining invisible to everyone who was unfit for the office he held, or who was extraordinarily simple in character.

Far out in the sea the water is very, very blue. You can see through it like glass. Far down in the water there are beautiful trees and plants. These trees and plants are so far from the top of the water that no one can see them. Fishes go in and out of the trees just like birds. This is the place where the Sea King’s city is.

The Sea King’s wife died many years before, so his old mother looked after him. She loved the Sea King’s six children very much, and they loved their grandmother, too. These six children were beautiful princesses. The youngest princess was the most beautiful: her eyes were as blue as the sea and her body was white like a rose. But, like all her sisters, she had no feet. The top of her body was like a girl’s body; and the rest of her body was like the body of a fish.

The six princesses often played all day in the big rooms inside the Sea King’s house. Beautiful flowers GREw out of the walls on all sides of them. When the windows were opened, fishes would go into the rooms just like birds come into our rooms. But the fishes were braver than birds They went up to the little princesses to eat food from their hands.

In front of the Sea King’s house there was a large garden full of red plants and blue plants. The flowers of these plants were like the burning sun. There was a blue light over the garden; you would think that you were up in the sky ···· not down in the sea.

Each of the little princesses had her own little garden inside the large garden. They could plant the flowers, which they themselves liked the most. The youngest princess planted red flowers in the garden, and she planted a red tree near the flowers. She was not at all like her sisters.
